Japanese Food Shopping

Most Japanese suburbs have supermarkets, around two thirds the size of those in Australia, where you can purchase packaged food, fish, meat and drinks. Vegetables and fruit are normally purchased from a dedicated shop. Here in Australia you can find Japanese grocers who provide a large range of Japanese products including packaged food and drinks. In Elizabeth St, South Yarra (Melbourne) you can find the Fujimart. This is the ideal place to purchase specialised Japanese ingredients for preparing authentic Japanese style cuisine. Don't worry, the helpful staff are bilingual and speak English very well. They will be more than happy to help you find what you are looking for. It is always best to take your shopping list of ingredients with the Japanese name as sometime a translation to English could mean a slightly different product.
At Fujimart you will also be able to purchase one of the Japanese style rice – Koshihikari. You can also purchase the Australian grown koshihikari rice from most supermarkets around Australia, however most supermarkets will only range the smaller packets of this rice.
Japanese cakes have a distinct style, even when based on an original European recipe. Japanese cakes are not as sweet as most cakes found in Western countries like Australia. This leads to great emphasis on the more subtle flavours in cake.
Naomi the Japanese pastry chef has worked for Grand Hyatt Hotel, Paterson’s Cake Shop, Paul Bocuse and other international hotels and bakeries in Japan. (Click on images for larger versions).
Next time you need a Birthday or Party Cake then remember Naomi the Japanese pastry chef. Cakes can be delivered* across most suburbs of Melbourne
